Listening is processing words into ideas.
Speaking is processing ideas into words.
You do them both at the same time in your native tongue - now.
You learned to do that long before you actually could say words.
You listened long before you could speak. You listened, watched, ate and slept.
You listened from the time you were very, very, very young.
It took a long time before you said any words.
It took longer before you could listen and then speak.
Listening and speaking in another language takes a long time. It takes as long as or longer than in your native language - because you have more to do than listen, watch, eat and sleep.
